Things to consider when choosing your wedding aesthetic

With google, pinterest + access to pretty things all over the web nowadays, being a modern bride working to pinpoint your wedding aesthetic can be an overwhelming task. Do you want to go boho + chic, or timeless + classic? Vintage romantic or fun + eclectic? At the end of the day, these are honestly only phrases, and can (and should!) be customized to whatever feels right + “screams” you + your fiancee. After all, this is a celebration of you two, through + through, and that should show via your design + your wedding aesthetic.

Ok, cool. So what IS a wedding aesthetic? Essentially, it’s your wedding style. It’s the overall look + feel you want your wedding to portray – mostly to the eye – but this can also translate to overall guest experience – think the food, the lights, the sounds, the scents. It also encompasses personal details like your wedding wardrobe, color palette, and details, down to the smallest of them, like your chargers, place cards + how you display how your guests are sitting.

Whether you’ve had it nailed down for years – trust us, we aren’t judging – or you haven’t got a clue, your squad over here at Leilani Weddings are excited to guide you throughout the process, step by pretty step. To get you started on the right foot, we’re sharing 5 things to consider when choosing your wedding aesthetic. We hope this helps pinpoint what it is you love in terms of colors, textures, flower types, etc.

TAKE A LOOK AT THE VENUE

When considering your wedding aesthetic, take a look at where you are getting married! Are you getting married in a ballroom with chandeliers or in a rustic barn in your hometown? On a rooftop by the sea or in an industrial warehouse space in the middle of the city? Your wedding venue can hep dictate your wedding aesthetic, so we suggest thinking about ideas before locking one in, but keeping it loose until you’ve nailed down your location. Here at Leilani Weddings, we are rule-breakers + love thinking outside of the box, so please keep this in mind: There really are no rules!! We oftentimes get asked, “I’m getting married at a hotel. Can I still have a garden-esque wedding that’s bright + airy”. And our answer is absolutely – YES! There are really no rules to this stuff, just suggestions + guidelines.

CONSIDER THE SEASON

The season that you’re getting married in should by any means influence your entire wedding aesthetic, but it can play a small role in choosing your color palette + wardrobe. There’s no need to choose an obvious spring palette of pastels or a maroon + gold palette for winter, but the seasons can serve as inspiration when thinking about what flowers you want at the wedding (consider what is in season, although your florist can assist with this, so don’t stress too much!) + choosing your wardrobe pieces. Some fun examples; If you are getting married during the winter, consider having your #bridetribe wear fur shawls. Out in the desert where it gets chilly at night? Throw on a denim jacket in the evening. There are also so many fun ways to incorporate season-appropriate favors, like rattan fans or white parasols for the ceremony if you’re in a tropical or warm locale. The time of year you’re hosting your wedding celebration can help inspire so much when it comes to the colors, textures, and overall feel of your wedding, but again – don’t feel pigeonholed into the “rules” – do what feels right, and choose things that you love, no matter what season it is – even if that means using burgundy + navy blue for a summer wedding.

INFUSE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

What IS personal style? Look around your home. What colors, textures, types of furniture + artwork do you see? Are you a minimalist or do you like things more fully-decorated? What kinds of fresh flowers do you keep on your dining room table? All of these can be key indicators of, perhaps, the direction you’d like to take your wedding aesthetic. Next, take a peek into your wardrobe. Do you see lots of color or more monochromatic hues of black + white? Do you see a lot of flowy, boho fabrics or structured + tailored silhouettes? Where do you love to shop? Take a peek into his wardrobe. Does he love wearing suits + crisp button-up shirts? Or is he a more casual guy who loves his T-shirts + jeans? All of these can be key indicators of what both of your personal styles are, and what direction your wedding aesthetic might possibly go.

Going beyond what’s inside of your home, you can look beyond it as well, for inspiration on your wedding design. Pinpoint designs + aesthetics that catch your eye in coffeeshops, bookstores + hotel lobbies. What are your favorite restaurants + why do you like their aesthetics? Thinking outside of the box now – what is your favorite movie? Play? Album cover?

By looking into your home decor, closet, favorite stores + movies, you can determine what your personal style is + apply it to your wedding colors + design. Taking the beauty that catches your eye from everyday life – both inside + outside of your home, along with your preferences in pop culture can spotlight your (and your future hubby’s) personalities in a really unique way, and help you to create a wedding aesthetic that’s uniquely yours.

CREATE A MOOD BOARD

Once you’ve looked around your home, his + her wardrobes, decided where you are getting married, and the time of year you are celebrating, it’s time to create a lookbook or vision board where you can put all your ideas in one place. It’s helpful to start with three descriptive words – words that describe the look + feel you want for your wedding, and start placing photos from there. For example, if you’re planning a wedding in Hawaii, consider writing: tropical, paradise, beach. If you’re walking down the aisle in Joshua Tree, write: bohemian, whimsical, desert. If you are looking at a ballroom or an estate, maybe you can write classic, vintage, glamorous. Once you have these words written down, you can shape your board around this aesthetic. As you’re planning, continuously remind yourself of these three word to help you narrow down your options when browsing images + try not to go too rogue (but have mercy on yourself when it does, you aren’t alone!) After compiling these images, you can then present to your wedding designer (shameless plug: hopefully it’s an LW designer who’s also planning your wedding) + he/she will take it all from there!
